Patrick Mahaffy

CEO of Clovis Oncology

Patrick Mahaffy

In the biotechnology arena, with a spotlight on oncology, Patrick Mahaffy emerges as an established figure credited with shaping drug innovations and market strategies in the US and Europe. While Boulder, Colorado, was the foundational base for his numerous ventures, he operates from vibrant South Florida.

Tracing his professional trajectory, he most notably spearheaded Clovis Oncology since its inception in 2009. Steering its course, he championed the launch of drugs for ovarian and prostate cancer that gained traction in the US and Europe. In addition, the firm ventured into the pioneering field of targeted radionuclide therapy. However, by 2022, factors like the COVID-19 pandemic's toll on cancer screening and FDA's reservations led to the company's cessation.

Before Clovis, his leadership was evident at Pharmion, which later integrated with Celgene, and at Nexstar Pharmaceuticals before its merger with Gilead Sciences. These establishments, under his watch, rolled out transformative oncology treatments. Remarkably, the therapeutic innovations he oversaw still set the benchmark in their respective categories.

His foray into the corporate realm began with Warburg Pincus, where his tenure as an investment banker spanned from 1986 to 1992. On the educational front, his an alumnus of Columbia University with a Master's in International Affairs. This accomplishment followed his Bachelor's from Lewis and Clark College in the same field.

Though reserved about his charitable engagements, it's known that he fervently backs initiatives centered around family welfare. Additionally, he lends his expertise to the Board of Trustees at Lewis & Clark College.

A hallmark of his approach includes visionary strategy, proactive teamwork, unwavering knowledge pursuit, and profound mastery over drug development. The commercial bodies he constructed in the US and Europe are a testament to his understanding, as do the sustained relevance of the drugs he championed.

Outside his corporate identity, Patrick Mahaffy immerses himself in sports, hiking, golf, and literature. An archaeological find in his Colorado residence in 2009 kindled his interest in ancient history, uncovering tools from the Clovis era, now showcased at the University of Colorado History Museum. Amidst professional accolades, he cherishes the sanctity of personal moments with loved ones
